Hello, Gorgeous and happy Thursday! Did you know that March is National Reading Month? Yesterday was also our beloved Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Ever since I started school in the US in the second grade, I developed an affinity for books. Every month I would look forward to the Scholastics magazines they send home with you. I would count up my quarters and dimes I’d saved up hoping to have enough for the latest “Babysitter’s Club” or “Sweet Valley Twins & Friends”. This love for reading remained as I got older. Despite being a tad bid antiquated with the popularity of Kindles & Nooks, I still love physical books. I love the nostalgia the scent of old books inspire. I’m reminded of simpler times sitting cross legged on the floor reading at a library and having to run to a card catalog to find a book.
I’m hoping to share this passion with my little guy. I’ve read up on countless benefits of reading to your baby like it helps build vocabulary, stimulates imagination, and improves communication skills. Aside from that, it’s the perfect opportunity to bond with your little one. We started a habit of reading to Apollo at bedtime. Even though I know he can’t exactly follow the narrative of his stories, it’s fun seeing him react to the inflections of my voice and the colors on the pages.
If I ever win the lottery, one thing I’d definitely spend my money on is a room filled with first editions. I don’t care what type of new tech emerges, I will always collect physical books. We’ve started to build Apollo’s collection with the help of Bookroo. Bookroo is an affordable monthly book subscription service with packages starting at $15.99/month. I love that they arrive in cute recycled boxes and the books are neatly wrapped and tied up with string. They’ve also developed an app that easily tracks reading with your kids. And to celebrate National Reading Month, they’re giving away some great prizes! Every day you read for 30 minutes or more and track it on the app is an entry to their giveaway. I know I have my eyes on the reading nook prize. It is seriously so cute and want it in Apollo’s nursery. You can read more about the giveaway here.
