If you’ve been around this blog or my Instagram before, you’d know that I’ve been very open about my fitness journey through my pregnancy and postpartum. Over time, a number of mama’s have asked me what my secret has been to being and staying a #fitmom despite the craziness of #momlife. I’ve decided to divulge some of my secrets these next few weeks in a new Fit Mom Essentials series. I will preface this series by saying that I absolutely am no authority in fitness or health as I am not a certified trainer or nutritionist. All I can share is my experience and what has worked for me. With that said, I hope you follow along and learn some of my Fit Mom Essentials.
Part I: Breakfast!
I know what you are thinking, “I don’t have time to make myself breakfast!” You know what I have to say about that? If you have time to read this blog post and you have time to peruse social media, you have time to make yourself a good breakfast. We all know how important breakfast is, right? That’s why we make sure our kids are fed and good to go in the morning. Well, take that logic and apply it to yourself. Because when you skip or make poor breakfast choices, studies show that you will be more prone to hunger problems, have lack of energy, and you’ll compromise your immune system. This will hinder any weight loss goals and even counteract it by making you gain weight. We don’t want that!
Fortunately, there are plenty of fast and nutritious options for a good breakfast! As a vegan, I am a big advocate for taking in more greens. Most days, I like to blend myself green juice made from fresh fruits and vegetables. But when I am in a pinch, V8® Veggie Blends has been my go-to. Each 8oz. glass is one full serving of greens and is 60 calories or less with no sugar added and no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. They launched two new flavors one being Caribbean Greens and it is so good! It has all the goodness of veggies but with the taste of fruit. We buy a few 46oz bottles at our local Walmart so we’re always stocked up. Its’ a perfect addition to my favorite easy breakfast: hearty overnight oats. Together, they combine to make a nutrition powerhouse. The best part? It takes only minutes to prepare!
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/4 cup granola
- 1/4 cup blueberries
- 1/3 cup strawberries
- 1/2 banana
- 1 Tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tsp coconut sugar
- The night before, prep overnight oats by combining 1/2 cup of rolled oats and 1/2 a cup of almond milk in a mason jar. Leave in the fridge overnight or for at least 4 hours.
- The next morning, cut up 1/3 cup of strawberries & 1/2 of a banana. Transfer the overnight oats into a bowl (or leave in the jar if there is room) and top with granola, blueberries, strawberries, banana, chia seeds, and coconut sugar.
- Enjoy with a glass of V8® juice drink and a hot cup of tea!
How easy is that? I know we all have a few minutes to put something like this together to ensure we set our day off on the right foot. Another way I enjoy V8® is as a post workout right before I start to make dinner. Blend it with ice and a couple of bananas for a yummy post workout smoothie. This new flavor is not available online yet, only at local Walmarts, but V8® Healthy Greens is available online.
